Natural Structures and Staking in the Garden Day - 10am - 4pm, 29th January 2025

We are so pleased that Jacky Mills will be leading our new course  'Natural Structures and Staking in the Garden Day’.  Jacky is a professional gardener, a freelance writer and a garden consultant based in Herefordshire, as well as an artist.

Jacky runs workshops on building natural garden structures aswell as her botanical art workshops.  Her structures and staking work has been featured in ‘Gardens Illustrated’ and she has previously worked with leading garden designers, Dan Pearson and Arne Maynard, and is currently working with Sarah Price Landscapes.

The day will begin with coffee and an introduction and general overview of the structures that can be made in the garden and the materials used.  This will be followed by all participating in some hands-on work with hazel and willow, so as to get a feel for the materials before having a tour around the garden to see various methods of staking and coppicing in situ.

After lunch, there will be some demonstrations of how to make a sweet pea frame and natural rose domes, following which there will be time to make some components of these structures, the skills of which you can use in the making of a few different types of structures.

The day will conclude with tea and cake and we will send you home with your creations and some materials to continue practising with, at home.

We have timed this workshop so that you will be able to get ahead with your rose supports and the staking of your perennials, following this course.  Jacky will be able to give you an idea of materials required and sources for ordering them so you can get organised and prepared for a wonderful season ahead!

Please bring your own secateurs and suitable outdoor wear for being outdoors as we will be outside a fair amount, so warm, casual clothing and strong shoes or boots are highly recommended for this course. 

Numbers will be kept small to ensure an intimate experience at Dorset Walled Garden.
