Rose Pruning Day 2026 with Troy Scott-Smith

We are so pleased that Troy Scott-Smith, Head Gardener of Sissinghurst, is once again leading a rose pruning workshop here in January 2026.  This one-day course will take the form of a talk, discussing the various needs of different types of roses and the methods that should be applied, depending on what type of roses are being pruned.  Troy will also explain and show how some roses require certain staking methods, depending on their growth habits and type.

Troy's lecture will show many different varieties of roses, both old and new, with suggested planting combinations, natural pest control methods and rose feeding programmes. You will feel inspired to add to your collection of roses, or simply be inspired to prune and care for your roses in the best possible way.

Troy has an incredible knowledge of roses, but especially of old roses, having worked with so many at some of the finest gardens in the country, during his horticultural career. Do not expect him to be able to tell you which is his favourite rose though, there are too many!

​After the talk, Troy will give demonstrations of pruning methods in the garden for people to see some of the techniques described in his talk.

The day will include coffee on arrival, a light lunch, culminating with tea and cake at the end of the day.

This will be a wonderful opportunity to learn from a horticultural expert. It will be both a very informative and practical course, which means numbers will be limited. Practical, warm, waterproof winter clothing and footwear are advised for this workshop.
